Watch Mushrooms in Schools on First Taste TV

August 12, 2020

With this year’s trade show season curtailed due to the pandemic, the school foodservice industry is finding new ways to learn and connect – and we’re excited to announce how Mushrooms in Schools is part of the movement!

On August 19th, Mushrooms in Schools was featured on Season 1 of First Taste TV, an innovative new platform for showcasing the cutting-edge products, services, technologies and equipment transforming the K-12 dining experience today.

Our very own Malissa Marsden, School Nutrition Consultant for Mushrooms in Schools, joined First Taste TV co-hosts Amanda and Marlon to talk all things MUSHROOMS.

Our First, First Taste TV Episode

Well, First Taste TV was definitely a first for me on so many levels. I was so pleased to work with Amanda and Marlon on this new opportunity to reach out to you.

Due to the pandemic, I was unable to join them in their Chicago studio for the live taping, and instead joined via my new best friend, Zoom! While this was different from what I had planned, we pulled it off and I hope you enjoy our efforts to share on demand resources for you and your staff.

My take: I loved it. It was like talking to you at a trade show but without having to travel for you to listen to me. Just like a food show, you can walk away if I bore you (hopefully not, though!), or stick around to ask questions if what I said resonated.

What We Covered

In the episode we talked about how to handle fresh mushrooms and how mushrooms fit into #RealSchoolMeals. So many schools were offering fresh, local mushrooms in their meals prior to the pandemic, and the move to grab and go meal service. I shared how some schools have adapted to use fresh mushrooms as an ingredient in salads and make your own pizza kits too, which is a fun spin on a student favorite, adapted to new serving methods.

I’ve been inspired by school nutrition directors who never stopped adding locally grown, nutritious mushrooms to their meals, even with the difficulty of meals in classrooms & beyond. I hope that the stories and tips I highlight in the episode spark some new ideas for your meal service as we start the new school year.

Wrapping Up

I do miss all of my friends and colleagues in school nutrition, and it was great to connect with those of you who joined me when we went LIVE on First Taste TV, August 19th 2020 on Facebook and YouTube. I was live on the Facebook event to answer your questions and capture your successes with Mushrooms in Schools! Thank you for supporting American Mushroom Farmers.
