Mushrooms continue to shine in 2024 food trend forecasts. This past week, mushrooms placed atop the well read, widely shared and heavily influential Whole Foods annual food trend list. With Whole Foods Reveals Its 10 Most Anticipated Food Trends For 2024, the number one prediction is “putting the plant back in ‘plant-based’”: “We’re seeing new and emerging protein-forward products with mushrooms, walnuts, tempeh and legumes in place of complex meat alternatives.” At least 18  outlets have shared the news to date, including Real Simple, Forbes, VegNews, Progressive Grocer and Grocery Dive.
 
Specialty Foods Association also called out mushrooms in their 2024 trend list. According to Prepared Foods, SFA’s trendspotter panel noted: “Mushrooms are Mushrooming.”
 
The top recipe in Food52’s roundup of 5 Weeknight Recipes for the Ambitious Cook was a Mushroom Chowder With Crispy Mushroom Bacon. “The crispy, crunchy bits, contrasting with the creamy soup (and tender bites of more mushrooms inside) are a perfect, savory match.”
